Disabled Living’s relationship with Jenx and Jiraffe probably started as Jenx was established. Back in the day, forty years ago, before the days of the internet, the Disabled Living Centres, of which there were over fifty around the UK, played a pivotal role in disseminating information about equipment to both professionals and members of the public.
My own personal memories of working with Jenx go back 27 years when I first started working for the Disabled Living Centre in Manchester. The charity provided services primarily to disabled people of all ages throughout Greater Manchester and Lancashire. One of the services we offered were monthly paediatric seating clinics. Companies with seating equipment were invited to display their products within the showroom, providing an opportunity for the children to be assessed for the most suitable product for their needs. Occupational Therapists would attend with the parents, having booked several appointments in advance. This really did offer the children and their parent’s choice.
The seating clinics were extremely successful, but the parents wanted more. They wanted the same opportunities to try equipment prior to purchasing, wheelchairs, bed, baths and so much more. The paediatric seating clinics at the Disabled Living Centre in Cheetham, Manchester were the ‘springboard’ to what is now the Kidz to Adultz Exhibitions, which are organised by Disabled Living.
Jenx was at our first exhibition, then named Kidz up North at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton, over 20 years ago. When Jiraffe (the UK distribution and retail arm of Jenx), was launched in 2014 they joined us on our journey. We have now become the largest UK exhibitions totally dedicated to disabled children and young adults, those with additional needs, their parents, carers, and the professionals who support them.
When I think of the company Jiraffe, there are two things that come to mind. Firstly, the vibrant exhibition stands with colourful equipment. Secondly, the memories I have of watching Jiraffe’s skilled equipment specialists interact with the children and their families. There have been many occasions at the Kidz to Adultz Exhibitions where I have stood near the Jiraffe stand, and had to wipe a tear from my eye, as a child uses a gait trainer for the first time. The parents didn’t think it would happen and their faces said more than words ever could. That day was the start of a journey of independence for that child, and we are delighted they still come along to the Kidz to Adultz Exhibitions today, even if they are in their twenties to see what new equipment is available. What a privilege it must be for the Jiraffe team to part of that journey.
I am delighted the Disabled Living staff over the years and the Kidz to Adultz Exhibitions have played a part in supporting an innovative company to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
